Purportedly designed by the Dutch general Pappenheim to accommodate both right- and left-handed fighters, this broad, round-plate design is great for ambidexterous people and for loaner gear. The AVBN 84 dates from the 17th century. The plates can be personalized with either Stars and Crosses (pictured) or Stars and Clovers. (See here
for pattern options). It has lots of hand protection - the most except for a full cup hilt - while still feeling nimble in the tip.
